坦桑石其稀有程度比鑽石稀有 1,000 倍，而且只來自東非坦桑尼亞單一的礦區，極具收藏價值，特別是原石。
除少數坦桑石有接近當初原色外（藍紫），一般坦桑石都是有熱處理過的，未加熱前一般是黃啡色，所以無加熱但又有藍紫的原色，是極稀有的，而且無加熱的坦桑石在特別的光譜下可以看到變色。無加熱(unheat)坦桑石的魅力在於其非常神奇的三色性（Trichroism），從不同的角度看，坦桑石會呈現藍紫色，紫紅色，黃綠色，有時不用借助儀器，找到特定的天然光下就能見到。
